HACKATHON VENUE

The hackathon will take place at the University Auditorium, Permanent Site, UDUS, Sokoto.

UNIVERSITY COMMITMENT

The University will provide shared accommodation and feeding to accepted participants. It will also subsidise their transport fare.

DURATION OF THE HACKATHON

The event will run for 24 hours; from 4:00pm Friday 3rd April, 2020 to 4:00pm Saturday 4th April, 2020

PREAMBLE

Usmanu Danfodiyo University, Sokoto (UDUS) hereby announces a technology hackathon event aimed at developing indigenous innovative digital solutions to the security challenges bedevilling university campuses and similar environments in Nigeria. Through this event, the University aims to bring together imaginative individuals who can conceive and develop sophisticated systems from basic digital technologies. The security challenges include but not limited to the following categories:

  1. car/motorcycle and property theft,
  2. vehicular surveillance, and
  3. general security of the university community.
The e-solutions are to be developed for a university campus that is wide, porous, and entangled in villages and farm lands. Note that a proposed e-solution may address more the one of the afore-mentioned challenges.

OBJECTIVES

The event has the following objectives:
  • To leverage on technology talented Nigerians to develop ideas, prototypes and products aimed at solving security problems facing university campuses in Nigeria
  • To create indigenous functioning products (or prototypes) combining basic hardware, software and telecommunication by the end of the event.
  • To enter into partnership with the best product (or prototype) for a full scale development

APPLICATION INFORMATION

  • Individual and teams of a maximum of three (3) persons can apply.
  • At the deadline of the application, all applications will be reviewed and successful participants will be contacted.
  • Successful candidates are expected to attend the hackathon event.
  • During the hackathon, participants will have access to domain knowledge.
  • Teams are expected to come up with a team name and attempt to build a product or prototype of their idea.
  • Teams are to create a pitch deck for the demonstrations in which each group presents their results to a panel of judges that will select the winning teams, and prizes will be given.

ELIGIBLITY CRITERIA

  • All team members must be Nigerians from any part of the Country
  • There is no age or gender restriction to participate in the hackathon.
  • An executive summary clearly stating your identified campus security challenges and your preconceived approach to tackling them must be attached.
  • All team members should be present at the event and come with their own personal computers.

FORMAT OF THE EXECUTIVE SUMMARY

The executive summary should not exceed 1,000 words, and should include the title, aim and objectives, methodology, and expected outcome of your preconceived e-solution. It should also include diagrams and images where applicable.

PRIZES

The university aims to partner with the best adjudged workable e-solution in each category for full scale development and sharing of intellectual property right. Also, for each category, prizes will be given to three adjudged best solutions as follows:

  • First position: NXXX.xxx
  • Second position: NYYY.yyy
  • Third Position: NZZZ.zzz
